Jubilation!

What a fantastic long weekend of Diamond Jubilee celebrations last weekend.  The BBC came in for a lot of criticism of its coverage, but I couldn't bring myself to watch on another channel.  The beeb is as much a part of the national infrastructure as Her Majesty and the Union Jack.  Nothing feels hugely important or moving unless viewed on BBC1!

I didn't quite manage to watch all the coverage, but I saw plenty of it.  The Queen sailing down the Thames.  The Queen at a concert.  The Queen on her balcony. The Queen in a carriage. The Queen in the back of a car on the way to something or other. There were countless opportunities to see her and feel a part of the celebrations.

Apart from calling Her Majesty "Mummy", didn't Prince Charles speak well at the end of the concert? "Millions, we are told, dream of having tea with you."  True story.

But the truest word said, or rather sung, was from Sir Paul McCartney. Whoever chose "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da" for the final song at the concert is a genius.  For after the pomp and ceremony of the jubilee is all over, "life goes on".

But it isn't a life untouched with the royal fairy dust - we go back to our ordinary lives that are indeed filled with the Queen's presence.  I realised this as, at the end of the concert, I unthinkingly stuck a little picture of the Queen on the top right hand corner of an envelope.  An envelope that will be posted in a box with the Queen's initials on it, and will be transported to its intended destination by the Royal Mail.

Tonight's dinner featured a certain sauce that comes pre-approved by Her Majesty.  It says so right at the top of the bottle.  Tomorrow's breakfast cereal is similarly endorsed.  It is all paid for with money covered in pictures of the Queen.  And which of us doesn't travel on the Queen's Highway?  (Maybe you need to be from Northern Ireland to appreciate that one, but since most of my readership lives there, I think I'll be understood.)  You'd have to go around with your eyes closed not to see the Royal family everywhere... and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Many congratulations on your Diamond Jubilee, Ma'am!
