One of the benefits purposes of having a blog is to complain. And I do like to complain when I have spent good money on something that turns out to have nonsense in it. Last time, it was Grandma who got it in the neck, in Pull the other one, Grandma!
Today my annoyance is focused on The Liverpool Cookbook. I have so far enjoyed this book, which features a host of restaurants across Liverpool, with each sharing a recipe or two. Its a sort of recipe book, culinary guidebook and local history book all rolled into one. I even know one of the chefs in it, which is all very exciting!
So what's my complaint I am sure you are wondering? Well one of the recipes that tempted me to buy the book is for Banoffee Pie. It's my favourite dessert and I would love to be able to make it from scratch. Not least because Tesco has stopped stocking the readymade toffee I used to use.
The introduction goes on about bananas being a major import commodity for Liverpool since 19whatever and then in a seemingly innocent segue into the recipe, it reads "Cooking bananas brings out their full flavour and they make a lovely dessert." All very nice of course. Until you read the bit of the recipe where you 'cook' the bananas; "When [the mixture is] chilled, slice the bananas and arrange them over the caramel."
So cooking bananas brings out their flavour, does it? Let's hope 'slicing' and 'arranging' has a similar effect.
And with that complaining done, time for a shameless plug;
