Masterchef I am not.

I have spent almost my entire waking day thinking about and preparing for dinner on Friday.  I have chosen to make two new dishes and thought that a practise would be in order.  So today was spent planning, purchasing, preparing, cooking and eating the new stuff. Erinne came round to help me with the eating part.

The Stilton and Walnut Tarts went reasonably well.  I tried four variations, and we felt like Masterchef judges trying all the different ones and choosing a winner.  We agreed on the best one, but after careful consideration I feel that they are not good enough for Friday's dinner party.  It's back to the drawing board for the starter.

The main was easy enough - mostly stuff done before.

For after dinner (and after desert) I wanted to try Chocolate Cigars as featured on Masterchef Australia's masterclass.  They took absolutely ages to make, but were very delicious.

At the end of the evening I thought I'd try another one of the Stilton and Walnut tarts, just to see what they would be like cold.  It struck me that I would have no hope of winning Masterchef, because if I didn't know what went into the tarts, I would not be able to figure it out.  Here's how I would do on the taste test:  I could identify one ingredient for sure - pastry.  After that I might guessed salt and got it right, but I'd never get stilton cheese, leek, celery or cream.  My palette would fail me on Masterchef because it only tells me its lovely.
